Results of the LACOTS/PHLS Survey of Ice Used to Cool Drinks and Ready to Eat Food - 1997 01/06/1997

1. Issue

1.1. The results and report of the liaison group survey of ice used to cool drinks and ready-to-eat food can be downloaded below.

2. Details

2.1 The results of the liaison group survey of ice used to cool drinks and ready to eat food that took place during May and June 1996 have been analysed at PHLS headquarters and a report produced. A copy of the report and the national results are attached. Individual reports for liaison groups that contributed more than 50 samples of ice used to cool drinks will be sent to group Secretaries shortly.

2.2 Whilst the report is in the public domain, its purpose at this stage is to inform those immediately connected with the survey. It is anticipated that an academic paper on the survey will be published later this year, and it is suggested that, where possible, enquirers should be directed to that paper.

2.3 In response to some of the local results several local authorities have produced basic guidelines for food proprietors on the hygienic preparation, storage and service of ice. A summary of the main points highlighted in these guidelines will be sent to food liaison groups for discussion with a view to the distribution of such guidance locally if considered appropriate.

2.4 The report and national survey results have also been sent to the Department of Health, the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food and Directors of Public Health Laboratories.
