New HSE campaign for students warns of CO dangers: “Will you wake up?” 12/01/2010

The Health & Safety Executive’s new campaign about carbon monoxide dangers Will you wake up? is aimed at students using gas appliances in rented accommodation.  The message is clear – landlords must have their gas appliances regularly maintained by a Gas Safe Register engineer and issue tenants with a copy of the gas safety certificate following the annual check.  Tenants whose landlords do not or cannot on request provide a copy of a valid gas safety certificate are urged to contact HSE

Students can also ensure they are protected by installing an audible carbon monoxide alarm and regularly testing that it is working.

Will you wake up? is aimed at making students, parents and landlords aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide.  It includes a poster, a flyer and leaflets which are all downloadable:

The reminder of CO dangers is timely in the current cold winter when students could be using gas appliances which might not have been properly installed or maintained.  PSH teams are encouraged to spread the message about CO dangers particularly at this time of year.

Detailed information on reducing cold-related illness and winter death is also available as part of the national Keep Warm Keep Well campaign – PSH teams are encouraged also to spread awareness of this material whenever possible.
